Every Afghan Aqcha runner carries a story you can walk on. Hand-knotted from 100% wool around the Aq Chah region of northern Afghanistan, the Aqcha (or Akcha, in the Persian spelling) is a simpler cousin of the famous Khal Mohammadi design. Warm reds dominate, typically set off with dark blue or black detailing, and the rich colours come from vegetable and other natural dyes. The most traditional layout features repeating columns of the 'gul' or 'fil pai' – the elephant footprint motif – usually on a red ground. Because each piece is individually made, its exact origin remains a mystery, which only adds to the charm and conversation value.
